Steve Wheeler from Plymouth University on new technology in learning
The Learning Technologies Conference in January will again bring out its crystal ball in the form of Plymouth University’s Steve Wheeler to share his thoughts on the emerging technologies in learning and development.
Conference Chair Donald Taylor, looking ahead to Steve Wheeler’s session, said: “The pace of new technology in learning shows no signs of flagging, and the pace of adoption seems phenomenally fast. Mobile learning hit the peak of hype and went through the nadir of irrelevance in a matter of a few short years and is now solidly mainstream.”
“What other technologies can we expect to follow the same route and be impacting our learning lives at work in the near future? We’ve invited Steve Wheeler back to help us find out!”
Touch screen and non-touch technologies, 3D capability, interactive handheld devices and social media - all are transforming some areas of learning and development. On the horizon, augmented and mixed reality, 3D printing and other innovations are heading in our direction. In the light of these developments this presentation will pose several questions: What changes can we expect to see in L&D in the next few years? What will be the benefits and limitations of new technologies on learners? How might we need to change our practices to harness the power and potential of these new technologies?
There are many possible learning futures, and each L&D professional has choices to make. With an eye on some of the possible futures of learning, we will explore these issues in relation to: New and emerging learning technologies; Changing roles and responsibilities; Location independent learning environments; Emerging ambient control interfaces; Alternative modes of assessment and feedback.
Steve Wheeler’s ‘New technologies’ session takes place on Thursday 26 January 2012, from 11:30 - 12:30. To book places for January’s conference, visit the Learning Technologies Conference programme and bookings web site.
