Employee learning and development in John Crane
Nigel Jenkins, Manager, Global Engineering Training & Enablement, John Crane
John Crane is a world-leading provider of engineered products & services for the major process industries, including oil & gas, power, chemical, pharmaceutical, and other general industries. John Crane is a part of Smiths Group, a global leader in applying advanced technologies and which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. John Crane has 6600 employees in 53 countries, all with personal learning & development needs for their current job roles and career progression.
Since 2006 John Crane has been developing its internal e-learning platform ‘Know-How’, offering flexible self-study to employees within broader ‘blended’ employee development programmes including instructor-led training, relevant work experience, mentoring etc. Key benefits of Know-How include the ability to deliver consistent / assessable / recordable learning resources to employees regardless of location.
A small core team in the UK works with a growing network of internal Local Administrators to develop, promote and support Know-How across the company’s >200 sales & service sites worldwide, and collaborates with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to expand the range of courses on offer in subject areas such as products, technologies, markets & industries, EHS compliance etc. Implementation and use of Know-How is then owned by local management teams, who adopt the system as a resource to help address identified training needs for employees in their territory.
